《柯林斯词典》宣布“封锁”(Lockdown)一词成为2020年度词汇。
据统计，新冠疫情暴发后，该词的使用率较2019年增加了60倍，词典编纂者称，在2020年间，柯林斯记录到“封锁”一词的使用次数超过25万次，远高于2019年时的4000次。
根据该词典，“封锁”的定义是“对旅行，社交活动和公共空间的使用施加严格限制。”
柯林斯词典语言内容顾问纽斯戴德表示，语言的使用反映了我们周遭的世界，选择“封锁”作为年度词汇，是因为它浓缩了数十亿人的共同经历，“这不是一个值得庆祝的年度词汇，但它可能概括了世界上大多数国家的一年”。
在《柯林斯词典》公布的2020年度10大代表词中，有6个与这场席卷全球的卫生危机有关。除了“封锁”之外，还包括“新冠病毒”(coronavirus)、“社交距离”(social distancing)、“自我隔离”(self-isolate)、“无薪假”(furlough)和“关键工作者”(key worker)。
